St. Patricks Day Art
Month of March Activity!
You can explore your Irish heritage (if you’re Irish, of course), study about St. Patrick, who brought Christianity to Ireland, or just enjoy a happy, green day–whatever makes you and your child most excited because that is what art-making is about! With all of the craziness with coronavirus, we have a lot of time at home right now. If you’re in a similar situation, you can spread these activities out over a few days and spend more time with each activity. And remember, you know your little one best, so feel free to tweak any of these activities to be the most enjoyable for you and your little one ☘️
Spaghetti Rainbow
Here’s what you’ll need:
– Spaghetti
– Popcorn
– Glue
– Markers
– Paper
Prep:
1. Boil the noodles and stain them with food coloring to color them however you want. (I used six different colors: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple)
2. Draw each line of the rainbow on a sheet of paper using different color markers so that kids can match the colored noodles to the right line on the paper.
Now let’s make it!
Step 1: Have your child match the colored noodles to the matching colored line of the rainbow.
Step 2: Together, put each colored noodle on the lined paper and show them how to cut the noodle off with their finger tips if it is too long.
Step 3: Show your child the popcorn and ask what white things your child sees in the sky. Yes! Clouds!
Step 4: Add glue on the paper and place popcorn on top of where the glue is. Explain you need to wait for it to dry.
For older kids, you can have them prep by boiling the noodles, staining the noodles with food coloring and drawing the rainbow on the paper. You can also have them explore the difference between the color indigo and violet which I categorized as purple. You can also talk about the color spectrum.
Gold Coins
Here’s what you’ll need:
– Gold glitter (Do not buy gold glitter dust!)
– Glue
– Box/Tupperware/some kind of container
Prep:
1. Cut out small circles from the yellow construction paper
Now let’s make it!
Step 1: Using the glue, draw a shape of your/your child’s choice on a yellow paper coin.
Step 2: Place the paper coin in the box/container
Step 3: Pour some glitter on top of the coin (if your child is pouring the glitter make sure they don’t dump too much glitter! It can get messy really fast. Or you could expect a mess and put down a sheet/tarp on the ground before starting.)
Step 4: This is the fun part! Close the box/container lid and have your child shake, shake, shake it 🙂
For older kids, you can have them prep by cutting out circles and doing the drawing with glue part!
Pot of Gold
Here’s what you’ll need:
– String
– Scissors
Prep:
1. Cut out two pot shapes out from the black paper
2. Use the hole puncher to punch holes along the bottom of the pot
3. Push the string through a hole on the end of both papers and tie them together
Now let’s make it!
Step 1: Show your child how to push string through one of the holes in the two papers stacked together and pull the string through from the other side.
Step 2: Then, bring that string back to the front and repeat
Step 3: Have your child try it
Step 4: Explain how it makes it easy when you pull the string out of the hole as soon as you see the tip of the string coming through.
For older kids, have them prep by cutting out the pots, punching holes and tying the string on to the paper pots.
